Albert Mohler: Talking About Talking About Abortion

Mr. Obama went on to call for “Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words.” In the end, the President’s comments were entirely about how Americans should discuss or debate abortion. There was no serious consideration of abortion itself. President Obama merely talked about talking about abortion.

I’d say there’s a lot of value in talking about how to discuss controversial issues- because, so often, it’s done in a wrong way, where neither side listens nor is being heard at all, the hate escalates and nothing is accomplished. Setting ground rules so that actual dialog can happen is the only way anything will ever change with emotionally-charged issues such as this one.

Would a policy-position speech really have been appropriate considering the setting?

Perhaps not, but he gave one anyway. :) Indifference, indecision, and “agreeing to disagree” are still policy positions…
