The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

WSMV-TV in Nashville has posted a listing of bands the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame forgot.

Here is the list, I assume in no particular order:

  • Genesis
  • Jethro Tull
  • Chicago
  • New York Dolls
  • Stooges
  • The Cars
  • Grand Funk Railroad
  • Styx
  • Moody Blues
  • Yes
  • Rush
  • Little Feat
  • Procul Harum
  • The Guess Who
  • Emerson, Lake and Palmer
  • MC5
  • Electric Light Orchestra
  • Heart
  • Linda Ronstadt
  • The Replacements

My thoughts:

1. What is the criteria for the Hall? Is it influence and talent? If so, Grand Funk Railroad? Really?

2. Is it just fame and success? If so, at least 2/3 of those bands should be in there.

3. Is it just me or do Yes and Rush seem to go together naturally? Almost as if whoever was making the list said, “Yes… OH, and RUSH.”

4. Of course, if #3 is true, then they’d have also said, “Styx… OH, and Boston… Kansas… Foreigner… Journey… Loverboy…” (None of whom are in the Hall.)

5. Grand Funk Railroad? Really?

6. Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against any of these bands, many of whom provide us with some great guilty pleasures. I’ve never gotten why Genesis is so big, but Shannon loves Chicago (especially the “17″ era) and I still think “Too Much Time on My Hands” is funky, “No Sugar Tonight” rocks, and I have a soft spot for “Whiter Shade of Pale” even though I have no idea what skipping the light fandango looks like.

7. Grand… Oh, never mind.
